Key takeaway:Â A diamond’s worth is set by the four Cs, carat weight, cut, clarity and colour, together with any grading certificate and its current condition. The only way to know your exact resale value is to have the stone weighed, tested and priced by a professional buyer against the live market.
It is one of the most common questions we hear at The Gold Avenue. Someone walks into our Illovo premises with an inherited ring, a loose stone from an old setting, or a diamond they no longer wear, and they simply want to know what it is worth. The honest answer is that no single number applies to every diamond, and anyone who quotes you a price sight unseen is guessing. What you can do is learn the factors that drive value, gather the right paperwork, and then bring the stone to a buyer who prices transparently. This guide walks you through both.
The four Cs that set a diamond’s value
The international standard for grading a diamond rests on four characteristics, known as the four Cs. Each one pulls the value up or down, and they interact, so a large stone with a poor grade in one area can be worth less than a smaller, cleaner one.
Carat weight
Carat is the unit of weight for a diamond, with one carat equal to 0.2 grams. Heavier stones are rarer, so price tends to climb as weight increases. Importantly, value does not rise in a straight line. A stone that crosses a popular weight threshold can command a noticeably higher price than one just below it, which is why precise weighing matters when you sell.
Cut
Cut refers to how well the diamond has been shaped and faceted, not its shape. It has the greatest impact on brilliance, fire and the way the stone catches light. A well proportioned cut returns light through the top of the diamond and makes it sparkle, while a poor cut leaks light and looks dull even if the other grades are strong. The round brilliant remains the most popular cut on the market.
Clarity
Clarity measures the tiny natural inclusions inside the stone and any surface blemishes. The fewer and less visible these are, the higher the clarity grade and the value. Grading scales run from flawless at the top down through various included grades. Many inclusions are invisible to the naked eye and only show under magnification, which is why a buyer will examine the stone closely rather than judge by appearance alone.
Colour
For a classic white diamond, the less colour it shows, the more it is worth. The standard colour scale runs from D, which is completely colourless and most valuable, through to Z, which carries a light yellow or brown tint. The differences between neighbouring grades are subtle and hard to spot without a trained eye and proper lighting. Fancy coloured diamonds, such as genuine pinks or blues, sit on a separate scale entirely.
Why certification matters
A grading certificate from a respected laboratory is the closest thing a diamond has to an identity document. Independent laboratories assess the four Cs objectively and record them in a detailed report. If your diamond came with a certificate, keep it, because it removes a great deal of guesswork and gives a buyer confidence in exactly what they are looking at.
That said, plenty of diamonds in Johannesburg drawers and jewellery boxes have no paperwork at all, especially older or inherited pieces. The absence of a certificate does not mean your stone is worthless. It simply means the grading work has to be done at the point of sale, which a professional buyer is fully equipped to do.
What changes the price beyond the four Cs
The four Cs describe the diamond, but a few practical factors decide what you can actually be paid for it today.
- The live market. Diamond and precious metal values move with international markets. The price that applies is the one on the day you sell, not a figure from years ago.
- Whether the stone is loose or set. A diamond mounted in a gold ring or pendant carries the value of the metal as well. We buy both the stone and the gold, so the setting is never wasted.
- Condition. Chips, abrasions or damage to the stone affect grade and value. A clean, undamaged diamond grades better.
- Retail price versus resale value. What you paid at a jeweller included their margin, marketing and overheads. Resale value reflects the true open market, which is normal and applies to almost everything bought at retail.
How to get an accurate valuation in Sandton
You cannot reliably value a diamond from a photograph or an online estimate. The stone has to be in front of a buyer who can weigh it, test it and examine it under magnification. At The Gold Avenue in Illovo, the process is straightforward and the assessment happens while you wait.
- Get in touch. Call, WhatsApp or use our online chat to let our team know what you have.
- Book a valuation. Come through to our premises at Illovo Point in Sandton at a time that suits you.
- Receive your offer. Your diamond is weighed, tested and examined, then priced against the live market and its condition. We explain how we reach the figure.
- Get paid the same day. If you accept, you are paid the same day by cash or EFT.
Because we work with an international dealer network, particularly in the UAE, we are often able to pay local sellers more competitively than the traditional pawn and gold-buying trade. There is no obligation to sell. Many people come simply to find out where they stand, and that is welcome.

Frequently asked questions
Can I value my diamond without a certificate?
Yes. Many inherited and older diamonds have no paperwork. A professional buyer assesses the four Cs in person, so a missing certificate does not stop you from getting an accurate offer.
Does a bigger diamond always mean more money?
Not necessarily. Carat weight matters, but a large stone with poor cut, low clarity or noticeable colour can be worth less than a smaller, higher grade diamond. All four Cs work together.
Why is the resale price lower than what I paid at a jeweller?
Retail prices include the jeweller’s margin and overheads. Resale value reflects the true open market, which is normal for anything bought at retail and not a reflection of a poor diamond.
How long does a valuation take at The Gold Avenue?
The assessment is done while you wait at our Illovo premises. Your diamond is weighed, tested and examined, you receive a clear offer, and if you accept you are paid the same day.
