Key takeaway:Â A Rolex can be a good store of value, especially well-kept steel sports models with their box and papers, but it is a watch first and an asset second. Treat strong resale as a bonus, not a guarantee, because condition, model and market demand all move the price.
Few questions come up more often at our counter in Illovo than this one. Someone inherits a Rolex, or they bought one years ago, and they want to know whether the thing on their wrist is genuinely worth more than they paid. The honest answer is that it depends, and any dealer who tells you a Rolex is a sure-fire investment is selling you something. What I can do is explain how the watch market really behaves, what actually drives resale value, and how to judge whether your own Rolex has held its worth.
I am Trent Saldsman, and I run The Gold Avenue, a luxury watch, gold and diamond exchange here in Sandton. We buy Rolex watches from the public every week, so this is not theory for us. It is what we price and pay out on, against the live market, every working day.
Why Rolex holds its value better than most
Rolex has built its reputation since 1905 on precision, quality and exclusivity, and that reputation is the foundation of its resale strength. Unlike most consumer goods, a good Rolex does not simply depreciate the moment it leaves the dealer. Several things work in its favour.
- Controlled supply. Rolex makes far fewer watches than the demand for them, particularly the popular sports models. Scarcity keeps secondary prices firm.
- Build quality. The materials and movements are made to last for decades, so a watch from years ago can still be desirable today rather than worn out.
- Brand recognition. A Rolex is known and trusted worldwide, which means there is always a buyer somewhere. That global demand matters more than you might think, and I will come back to it.
- A track record. Certain models have appreciated strongly over the long term, especially sought-after vintage references. The famous “Paul Newman” Daytona is the headline example, with rare examples commanding extraordinary prices at auction.
Which Rolex models tend to hold value
Not every Rolex performs the same way on the secondary market. As a general pattern, the stainless steel professional sports models have the strongest and most consistent resale demand.
- Submariner. The benchmark dive watch, and one of the most liquid Rolex references to sell.
- Daytona. The chronograph that collectors chase, steel versions especially.
- GMT-Master II. Popular travel watch with strong, steady demand.
Dress models and precious-metal pieces still have real value, but their resale can be more sensitive to fashion and to the underlying gold price. That is worth understanding before you assume every Rolex behaves like a blue-chip sports model.
The honest risks you should weigh up
This is the part most articles skip, so I will be direct about it.
The market can soften
Luxury watch prices are not a straight line up. The market goes through hot spells and cooler spells like any other. Rolex has proven relatively resilient over time, but that does not mean prices only rise. If you buy at a peak, you can overpay.
Condition is everything
A scratched case, a worn bracelet, a service-replaced dial or a missing box and papers can all pull the value down meaningfully. The same reference in mint, fully documented condition and in tired, undocumented condition are two very different sales.
It needs servicing
A Rolex is a mechanical instrument. Skipping servicing for years can lead to wear that costs you at resale. Maintenance protects value rather than adding to it.
Fakes are everywhere
The counterfeit market is sophisticated. A watch that looks right to an untrained eye can be a replica or a “Frankenwatch” built from mixed parts. This is exactly why proper testing matters, and why you want a buyer who actually authenticates rather than guessing.
So, is it a good investment?
Here is how I put it to people in Johannesburg who ask. A Rolex is a genuinely good way to own something beautiful that also tends to hold value, which is more than you can say for almost any other thing you wear. But it is not a share, a bond or a Krugerrand. The price depends on a specific model, a specific condition and the mood of the market on the day you sell. Buy one because you want to own it and wear it. If it appreciates, treat that as a welcome bonus rather than the plan.
If you already own one and you are reading this to work out what it is worth today, the only way to know is a proper valuation against the current market, not a price you saw quoted somewhere online two years ago.
Selling a Rolex in Johannesburg: how we value yours
When you bring a Rolex to The Gold Avenue at our Illovo premises, we do not guess. We assess the model and reference, inspect and test the watch for authenticity and condition, and check whether you have the box, papers and any service history. The offer is then priced against the live market for that watch.
Here is where the international side matters. I work with a dealer network abroad, particularly in the UAE, where demand for certain Rolex models is exceptionally strong. Because Rolex enjoys that worldwide demand, access to those buyers often lets us pay more competitively for the right watch than a seller would get from a local pawn shop working off a domestic price alone. That global reach is one of the reasons we built the business the way we did.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need the box and papers to sell my Rolex?
No, you can sell without them, and we still buy watches that have lost their documentation over the years. That said, the original box, papers and any service records do support a stronger offer, so bring whatever you have.
How do you work out what my Rolex is worth?
We identify the exact model and reference, inspect and test the watch for authenticity and condition, and then price it against the live market for that specific Rolex. Condition and completeness move the final figure.
Will I be paid the same day?
Yes. Once you accept our offer, we pay the same day by cash or EFT. There is no waiting around for the money.
Do you only buy sports models like the Submariner?
No. We buy across the Rolex range, including dress and precious-metal models, as well as other luxury watch brands. Bring it in for a valuation and we will price it on its own merits.
