Key takeaway: A gold exchange is a business that buys gold, coins, diamonds and watches from the public and pays you for them on the day. When you search for a gold exchange near me, the deciding factor is not distance. It is whether the buyer has a fixed office you can find, registrations you can verify, testing you can watch and payment at the table. The Gold Avenue is a gold and diamond exchange on the 8th floor of Illovo Point in Illovo, Sandton.
The phrase “gold exchange” is used loosely in South Africa. Some businesses using it sell bullion. Some buy scrap for refining. Some trade from a counter in a shopping centre with no fixed premises behind it. And some, like The Gold Avenue, buy outright from the public and pay you the same day. Knowing which one is nearest to you decides whether you get a fair price or a wasted trip.

This guide explains what a gold exchange does, what your gold is measured on, what happens from the moment you arrive to the moment you are paid, and what to check before you hand anything over. It is written from behind the desk at The Gold Avenue, which buys gold jewellery, Krugerrands, diamonds and luxury watches from the public in Illovo, Sandton.

What a gold exchange near you can do for you
Walking into a gold exchange does not commit you to selling. There are four different things you can walk out with, and it helps to know which one you want before you arrive.
| What you can do | What it means | Right for you when |
|---|---|---|
| Sell outright | The exchange tests and weighs the item, makes an offer, and pays you once you accept | You want the item gone and the money in your account today |
| Free valuation | The item is tested and an offer is explained, with no obligation to accept it | You want to know what something is worth before you decide anything |
| Buyback Agreement | The exchange buys the item and pays you, and you may buy it back on an agreed date at a price set up front | You need funds now but want the option to get the piece back |
| Secure courier or an appraisal at you | The exchange arranges collection, or comes to your home or office to appraise | You cannot travel, or the items are too valuable to move yourself |
At The Gold Avenue all four are available. Valuations are free and there is no pressure to sell on the day.
Why “near me” matters more with gold than with anything else
With most searches, near me is about convenience. With gold it is about safety. You are carrying something valuable to an address you have never visited, and the walk from the car to the door is the part nobody thinks about until they are doing it.
That is why the building matters as much as the buyer. The Gold Avenue sits on the 8th floor of Illovo Point, an AAA-grade office building with boom-controlled access, underground parking, 24/7 CCTV, 24-hour guarding and tactical response in the area. Booked clients are sent step-by-step directions with photos of the entrance, the parking and the lift, so nobody arrives lost with valuables in a handbag. The full detail is on our safety page.

Compare that to a counter in a mall with no private space, where your items are assessed in front of whoever is standing behind you. Distance is not the measure. Privacy, parking and controlled access are.
What happens inside, from arrival to payment
The visit at The Gold Avenue is short and follows the same order every time.
A visit to The Gold Avenue, arrival to payment
Walk-ins and booked appointments follow the same five stages.
- You arrive. Walk in or book ahead by phone, WhatsApp, email or through the website. You are taken to a private, air-conditioned consultation booth and offered refreshments.
- Your items are tested in front of you. A Purchasing Consultant weighs and tests each piece at the desk with a Niton XRF gold analyser, the Sherlock Holmes-Yehuda laboratory diamond testing system, professional diamond testers and specialist watch authentication tools. Nothing goes into a back room.
- You get an offer and the reason for it. The number is explained item by item. You are free to say no, and free to leave with everything you came in with.
- If you accept, the paperwork is done at the desk. Your details are captured on an iPad and a one-page Sale Agreement is signed electronically.
- You are paid. Immediate EFT through a business banking platform, with immediate clearance across participating South African banks. Cash is available subject to ID, compliance and the cash held on the premises, and larger cash amounts need a few business days’ notice.
The whole thing typically takes 10 to 15 minutes. Returning clients are frequently finished in under five.

How a gold exchange decides what to pay you
Gold jewellery is priced on the fine gold inside the piece, not on what the piece looks like. Weight and purity give the fine gold content, that content is valued against the live international gold price, and refinery and smelting costs and a commercial margin come off. Stones, branding and craftsmanship are valued separately where they carry resale value.
Fine gold content by carat
A 9ct piece and a 24ct piece of the same weight are not close in value.
| Marking | Stamp | Fine gold | What it means for the offer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9ct | 375 | 37.5 percent | Common in older South African jewellery |
| 14ct | 585 | 58.5 percent | Frequent in imported and designer pieces |
| 18ct | 750 | 75 percent | Standard for fine jewellery and most diamond settings |
| 22ct | 916 | 91.6 percent | Common in Indian and Middle Eastern jewellery |
| 24ct | 999 | 99.9 percent | Bars, wafers and investment pieces |
An unmarked piece is not a problem. The Niton XRF analyser reads the actual composition in seconds, which is also how a gold-plated or filled item gets picked up before anyone wastes time on it. Our guide on how to check if gold is real covers what you can tell at home.
Gold coins are priced differently
Krugerrands and gold coins are not priced as scrap. They move with the live gold price, the rand and what trade buyers are paying that day, which is why no honest exchange publishes a fixed coin price.

| Krugerrand size | Fine gold content | Gross weight |
|---|---|---|
| 1oz | 31.10 g | 33.93 g |
| Half ounce | 15.55 g | 16.97 g |
| Quarter ounce | 7.78 g | 8.48 g |
| Tenth ounce | 3.11 g | 3.39 g |
Note the gap between the two columns. A Krugerrand is 22ct, but the copper is added on top of a full ounce of fine gold rather than taken out of it, so a 1oz Krugerrand carries a full troy ounce of gold and weighs more than an ounce. Applying 91.6 percent to the gross weight understates the coin. Proteas, Naturas, SA Ponds, British Sovereigns, Britannias, Canadian Maple Leafs and American Gold Eagles are all bought too. See Krugerrands and gold coins.
What gold has done in rands
The reason a gold exchange cannot quote you a price over the phone and keep it is that the underlying number moves daily, in two currencies at once. The rand picture is the one that matters to a South African seller, and it looks like this.
Gold price in rand per troy ounce, annual average, 1999 to 2026
Market gold price, not an offer. What an exchange pays sits below the spot price, after refining costs and a margin.
| Year | Gold, USD per ounce | USD/ZAR | Gold, rand per ounce |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1999 | $279 | 6.12 | R1,706 |
| 2008 | $872 | 8.27 | R7,163 |
| 2016 | $1,250 | 14.69 | R18,330 |
| 2020 | $1,771 | 16.44 | R29,149 |
| 2024 | $2,389 | 18.32 | R43,679 |
| 2026 | $4,560 | 16.37 | R74,606 |
Two engines drive that line: the dollar gold price and the rand exchange rate. They do not always pull together, which is why the rand gold price has risen in years when the dollar price fell. The figures above are market prices for the metal, calculated from the LBMA gold price and the European Central Bank rand rate. They are not what any buyer pays you, because refining costs and a commercial margin come off before an offer is made. The detail is in our breakdown of the Krugerrand price today in rands.
What a gold exchange buys
A specialist exchange is not limited to scrap chains. The Gold Avenue buys across four categories, and a single visit can cover all of them.
- Gold. Every purity from 9ct to 24ct, hallmarked or not, broken, damaged, tarnished, designer or unworn, plus minted and stamped bars. See gold jewellery.
- Coins. Krugerrands in 1oz, half, quarter and tenth, plus Proteas, Naturas, SA Ponds, Sovereigns, Britannias, Maple Leafs and Gold Eagles. Gold coins only.
- Diamonds. Certified and non-certified, loose or set in rings, earrings, tennis bracelets and necklaces, priced on carat, colour, clarity, cut and marketability against the Rapaport Diamond Report. See diamond jewellery.
- Luxury watches. Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Omega, TAG Heuer, Breitling, Cartier, IWC and Panerai, priced on brand, model, year, condition, demand and secondary-market pricing. Box and papers help but are not essential. See luxury watches.
If you are not sure whether something qualifies, send a photo on WhatsApp first and save yourself the trip. Expect any offer to sit well below an insurance valuation or a retail price, because those figures include manufacturing, design, branding, retail mark-up and replacement cost. A buyer pays on the underlying value, and our guide to what gold jewellery is worth goes further into the difference.
One thing that separates a specialist exchange from a scrap counter is where the item ends up. The Gold Avenue has an extensive local and international dealer network, so the right jewellery, watches and polished diamonds can be placed with buyers who pay more than a local refinery would.
How to tell a legitimate gold exchange from a chancer
Gold buying in South Africa is regulated, and the registrations are the quickest way to sort one from the other. Ask any exchange these questions and watch how fast the answer comes.
- Are you a registered second-hand goods dealer? The Second-Hand Goods Act requires it and a SAPS certificate proves it. The Gold Avenue holds one.
- Are you registered with the Financial Intelligence Centre? The Gold Avenue is a registered reporting entity as a Krugerrand dealer, which is why every transaction follows FICA and FIC requirements.
- Are you a member of the Jewellery Council of South Africa? The Gold Avenue has been a member since 2023.
- Will you test my items in front of me? Anything assessed out of your sight is a problem, whatever the reason given.
A buyer who answers all four without hesitating has nothing to hide. One who changes the subject has answered you anyway. Our guide on choosing a gold dealer near you covers the rest of the checks.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a gold exchange near me that is open now?
The Gold Avenue is open Monday to Thursday 08:00 to 17:00 and Friday 08:00 to 16:00. Saturday is by pre-booked appointment only, and we are closed on Sundays and public holidays. Walk-ins are welcome during opening hours and an appointment guarantees a booth is free when you arrive.
Where is the closest gold exchange to Sandton?
The Gold Avenue is at Office 804, 8th floor, Illovo Point, 68 Melville Road, Illovo, Sandton, 2196, a few minutes from Sandton CBD with underground parking in the building.
Does a gold exchange pay cash?
The Gold Avenue pays by immediate EFT with immediate clearance across participating South African banks. Cash is possible subject to ID, compliance and the cash held on the premises, and larger cash amounts need a few business days’ notice.
Will a gold exchange buy 24 carat gold?
Yes. The Gold Avenue buys every purity from 9ct to 24ct, hallmarked or not, along with gold coins and minted and stamped bars. Higher purity means more fine gold per gram, so a 24ct piece is worth more per gram than a 9ct one of the same weight.
What must I bring to sell gold?
Your SA ID, passport or SA driver’s licence, and proof of banking details. Both are required under FICA at any registered dealer, so an exchange that does not ask for them is not following the law.
Can I get a valuation without selling?
Yes. Valuations at The Gold Avenue are free and carry no obligation. You can have items tested, hear the offer and leave with everything you brought in. More on how that works is in our guide to selling gold for cash in Johannesburg.
